As South Africa commemorates Youth Month, it is vital to reflect on the opportunities and challenges facing the nation’s young people today. The OR Tambo Special Economic Zone (SEZ) stands as a beacon of hope and progress, uniquely positioned to empower youth through expanding infrastructure and strategic location, unlocking unparalleled opportunities for skills development, employment, and economic participation. By fostering partnerships between government, private sector, and educational institutions, the SEZ aims to create a sustainable ecosystem that nurtures innovation and entrepreneurship among the youth. As these young individuals gain access to resources and training, they are better equipped to contribute to the nation’s growth and prosperity, paving the way for a brighter future for all South Africans.
Understanding the current socio-economic and political landscape

The socio-economic and political environment in South Africa is complex. Politically, the South African government continues to prioritise youth empowerment and economic transformation, evidenced by initiatives such as the 2026 National Youth Service Phase V, which aims to create 100,000 paid opportunities for unemployed youth, and the Jobs Fund’s 13th round focusing on youth and women (South African Government, 2026a; South African Government, 2026b).
Economically, South Africa faces significant challenges such as a youth unemployment rate of 45.8% in early 2026, with the 15–24 age group experiencing unemployment as high as 60.9%, underscoring persistent inequality and economic barriers for youth (Statistics South Africa, 2026).
Socially, there is a strong demand for inclusive growth and access to education and skills training, as reflected in the 2026 State of the Nation Address which highlights reforms in post-school education, dual training models, and expanded workplace learning opportunities (South African Parliament, 2026).
OR Tambo SEZ: A strategic catalyst for youth empowerment
Situated in a strategic location near Africa’s busiest airport, the OR Tambo SEZ offers a unique platform for businesses to thrive and access global markets, with infrastructure development at 40% completion in Precinct 2 and full tenancy subscription indicating robust investor interest. This Zone not only fosters economic growth but also creates numerous job opportunities for the youth, empowering them to gain valuable experience and skills. As the SEZ continues to develop, it is poised to play a crucial role in shaping a more prosperous future for the surrounding communities. Here is how the SEZ actively works towards youth centred empowerment:
- Skills Development: The SEZ supports youth skills development through distinct initiatives that emphasise specialised training in commercial jewellery manufacturing and design, which aligns with its industrial focus on jewellery beneficiation. The Zone has also implemented an internship programme that employs recent graduates and unemployed youth in various specialisations, providing them with valuable work experience and exposure to the corporate environment. This initiative not only enhances their employability but also promotes strong work ethics and professionalism. By equipping them with practical skills and real-world experience, the SEZ aims to inspire the next generation of leaders in the jewellery industry and beyond.
- Employment Opportunities: By attracting investment and encouraging business growth, the SEZ creates a wide range of job opportunities, helping to address the high youth unemployment rate. The Jewellery Manufacturing Precinct within the OR Tambo SEZ is aligned with South Africa’s mineral beneficiation strategy and has created over three thousand jobs. The SEZ focuses on manufacturing high-value, low-mass products such as jewellery and diamond beneficiation, positioning it as a strategic export-oriented industrial hub.
- Entrepreneurship and Innovation: The SEZ’s supportive ecosystem encourages young entrepreneurs to innovate and grow their businesses, contributing to a vibrant local economy. For example, the Zone has attracted young local entrepreneurs like Meiki Ngcengni, of Isabella Design Jewellers who is stewarding a family-owned business. The Zone also has a business development hub that provides essential training, mentorship, and access to markets for startup enterprises, enabling youth-led micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to scale their operations and compete globally. These initiatives not only foster innovation but also create sustainable employment and economic diversification in the surrounding communities.
Looking Ahead: Building a Resilient and Inclusive Economy
As South Africa navigates its socio-political and economic challenges, the OR Tambo SEZ exemplifies how strategic infrastructure and location can unlock new opportunities for youth. By investing in skills, creating jobs, and fostering innovation, the SEZ is poised to play a critical role in shaping a resilient, inclusive economy where young people can thrive.
This Youth month, let us recognise the potential of South Africa’s youth and the transformative power of initiatives like the OR Tambo SEZ in turning that potential into reality.
The OR Tambo SEZ is constantly pursuing opportunities to expose, support, and develop young up and coming MSMEs and invite business and academia to partner with us to make a meaningful difference to the local businesses.
