Skills & Enterprise Development
In support of the JMP concept, the Gauteng IDZ developed and implemented a competitive skills development programme. Known as Design50, the programme was located at Rand Refinery before its relocation to the OR Tambo SEZ.
Over a period of 7 years, the programme successfully trained historically black South Africans in jewellery design skills, ensuring that sufficient skills are available in the market to support investors located at the SEZ. The Design50 programme has since been re-engineered into an enterprise programme supporting small businesses in the jewellery and diamond sector with opportunities for market offtake, further contributing to the sustainability of businesses in the jewellery industry
Agro Processing
The Gauteng IDZ has successfully delivered one of the largest food factories in the world.
Located at OR Tambo SEZ Precinct 1 and operating since April 2019, the 22 735m² food facility utilises the second largest refrigeration plant in the world. Operated through a domestic investor, this food factory provides a platform for the increased export of fresh food products from South Africa.
The Jewellery Manufacturing Precinct
The Gauteng IDZ has successfully conceptualised and is constructing a Jewellery Manufacturing Precinct at OR Tambo SEZ Precinct 1.
Designed in keeping with international standards, the JMP as it is called, is destined to be a globally competitive location for the production and export of mineral products from South Africa. The success of the JMP lies in its cluster approach, where all key role players in the mineral beneficiation sector (viz. the South African Diamonds and Precious Metals Regulator, gold refinery companies, diamond sales companies, jewellery and diamond beneficiation companies as well as industry responsive support companies) are all located together in a safe and secure precinct, thereby enhancing their ability to produce and safely export high value products through OR Tambo International.
