In 2012, the GGDA initiated a Skills Development Programme called Design @50, a jewellery design training project which forms part of the Jewellery Manufacturing Precinct project, an anchor project of the Gauteng IDZ.
The programme which provides for the enrolment of 15 students with a background in jewellery design, is undertaken in co-operation with the Jewellery Council of South Africa, was launched at a new training facility based at Rand Refinery, Germiston during April 2013.
The objective of the programme is to train attendees in Commercial Jewellery Design. Only candidates with a background in jewellery design and manufacturing who are interested in starting a business in commercial jewellery design qualify for consideration.
The project specifically aims to increase the technical proficiency of learners enrolled in the course to produce skilled jewellery designers who, in conjunction with jewellery manufacturers, will contribute to developing the South African jewellery market by producing high quality products that follow and set fashion trends, are well marketed and which can compete locally and in the global market.
The following services are offered to private and corporate clients:
- Jewellery design
- Jewellery manufacture
- Product Development
